When I signed up to write this week’s WYFP? diary a couple weeks ago, I planned on talking about how my digital media and writing business is struggling. More specifically, I sometimes wonder if I’m already too old for a digital or communications job in government and politics. Many people who do digital and/or comms for campaigns and elected officials in Michigan are younger than me. (I’m in my early 30s.)
But that’s not my biggest effing problem for me right now — for two reasons.
The good news is that I got a new client, so that alleviates some of the financial stress. (Yay!)
The bad news? Well, see the title of this diary.
A close relative of mine was diagnosed with cancer last year. Doctors were optimistic (as were we), and she did undergo radiation.
Unfortunately, we found out this week that it had spread. The doctors aren’t optimistic, and their focus now is on palliative care and comfort. Meanwhile, my focus is on doing as much as I can with her while she’s still with us.
Oh, and did I mention that I’ve been volunteering for a number of campaigns during this election? So I have to re-evaluate how active I am with campaigns (and which ones I’m involved with) now. Luckily, my new client is political, so I’m still able to be involved during these next 59 days. But the timing of all of this is, shall we say, less than optimal.
Obviously, I want her to live long enough to vote and have her ballot counted, especially since we live in Michigan. She requested her absentee ballot for both the primary and general elections. Selfishly, I also don’t want her to pass on my birthday next month.
Again, I want to make the most of my time with her. Any ideas and advice on how to do that?
